In 1987 I was going regularly to the South Bronx and it was like the wild wild west back then. Just this crazy energy fueled place with B Boy culture and creativity and rampant lawlessness. I became a grass roots rep. for B Boy Records and worked with the late Bill Kamara who kept me stocked on all things related to the label. I was an engraver at the time back in Minnesota at my father's trophy shop, but would drive 17 hours to the Bronx (many many times I did this). I ended up engraving the plaque that is featured on the cover of BDP's first album Criminal Minded and they thanked me on the back cover for that. I was DJing in the year Scott died 1988 back in Minnesota doing custom rap master mixes on KMOJ Radio in Minneapolis and had mismatched turntables with pennies taped to the needles so the needle would not skip when I tried to scratch. I had a Digitech 2 second mono guitar foot pedal sampler and I was just beginning to experiment with guerilla style underground cassette dubbing techniques etc. Bill kamara asked me if I wanted to do a dedication remix for Scott and of course I did want to. (even though I felt I was not qualified) I did this mix with my primitive gear set up back in Minnesota and it ended up being my first appearance on vinyl and has my photograph on the inserts, which can be found here, www.discogs.com/master/119687-Boogie-Down-Productions-Man-His-Music
What a wonderful time to be alive... Years later I ended up warming up for KRS One at an outdoor festival in Wisconsin.
